Workshop: Pick Up an Improv Cup

Part of the Hartford Improv Festival

Do you find yourself in talking head scenes that take place…somewhere…ish? Feel anxious about initiations or finding your next game move? Pick up an improv cup. In this workshop we’ll practice some technical miming skills for creating imaginary objects, then explore why we should even bother (to add specificity, help develop a character, and even progress a scenic game).

Literary Improv Techniques [Online]

The improviser has to be both actor and writer, without the luxury of time (or a favorite coffee shop) to work on character development or plot. This workshop series will explore using literary techniques in the moment, with our teammates, to make our longform improv scenes more resemble scripted material. With a focus on character and the use of metaphor, we’ll practice generating rich, specific people and places that will engage audiences and be fun to inhabit. All in the comfort of our pajamas.

This 3-week mini-course for intermediate to advanced improvisers was developed specifically for an online platform and will blend lecture, discussion, and yes, virtual exercises! Students will be encouraged to do very brief selected readings between class meetings.

3 Wednesdays 6:30-8:30pm EDT 4/1, 4/8, 4/15
